FARM DIRECTOR

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Farm Director is responsible for planning and executing the farm operation, with a goal of regeneration in land use.  Key responsibilities include planning, budgeting, ordering seeds & supplies, managing the greenhouses and 12 acres of active crop fields, following a production plan, and overseeing the farm operation; also organizing and doing related communications, supervising a farm staff of between 5 and 10 employees depending on season, and performing administrative duties related to farming. The Farm Director will need to communicate across all departments within the organization. The ideal candidate is someone who aligns with our mission, has a deep working knowledge of permaculture practices and regenerative agriculture including the idea of incorporating perennial crops and grazing animals, and is committed to expanding their knowledge as the field develops. This individual understands that regeneration is not just about the farm and land but that it spans all aspects of the community and is willing to embrace that.

FARM OPERATIONS:

Work with, train, teach and oversee farming staff to:

  • Manage 12 acres of active crop fields (mixed vegetable, flowers, cover crop) using organic & regenerative practices

  • Analyze existing operations, crops, livestock, staff, and financial documents and recommend improvements.

  • Create and carry out an annual crop plan, including greenhouse production, tillage, field prep, fertilization, transplanting, direct seeding, irrigation, weed control, and pest & disease management

  • Hire, train, and manage a seasonal crew of farm employees

  • Develop and execute a long-term plan to implement crop rotation, cover cropping, and other techniques related to regenerative farming 

  • Upkeep and maintain equipment and infrastructure

  • Budget and maintain financial records; plan for and purchase supplies

  • Follow food safety guidelines to ensure the quality and safety of produce

  • Keep farm spaces tidy to maintain appearance of the farm, including some landscaping

  • responsible for flower succession planning 

  • seeding, circulating floral crops and fillers, harvesting and arranging bouquets 

  • Work seamlessly with the kitchen and market with open lines of communication on crop forecasts and planning.

  • Provide ongoing performance evaluations for existing staff members.

  • Collaborate with the Finance Director to prepare budgets and financial reports.

  • Work with the Programming Director to set and oversee appropriate programming goals and strategies

  • Work with the Animal Care Director to set goals related to livestock pasture rotation

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least five years of vegetable farming experience, including at least one year in a farm manager or assistant farm manager position.

  • Commitment to organic, regenerative, and innovative agricultural practices

  • Prior livestock farm animal experience

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Knowledge of season extension practices

  • Experience in tractor operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting

  • valid driver's license required for operation of farm vehicles

  • Basic computer skills, including Excel

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude; able to keep up morale throughout long days of physical, repetitive work in all weather conditions

  • Excellent attention to detail; able to maintain high quality standards and follow food safety protocols while working quickly and efficiently

  • Comfortable working both individually and on a team

  • Flexible; able to adapt to shifting priorities and conditions and help out where needed

  • Able to take direction, learn quickly, ask for help and clarity as needed, and accept and act on constructive feedback

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time, year-round position, but hours will vary depending on the season..

 

COMPENSATION 

This position is salaried: 70k+ based on experience
